Christopher Reed

Christopher A. Reed teaches modern Chinese history at The Ohio State University. He spent the pivotal 1978-79 year teaching English in Kaohsiung, participated in Taiwan’s first legal Human Rights Day celebration, and left Kaohsiung two months before the onset of the events that led to the Kaohsiung Incident, often seen as the birth of modern Taiwanese democracy. He has lived and conducted research in Taiwan for a total of three years in the thirty-year period since then. In 2007-08, he is a visiting scholar at the Institute of Modern History at Academia Sinica, Taipei, supported by a Fulbright Senior Scholar Research Grant. In the early 2000s, in a Columbus bar, he happened to meet the ex-Marine, a Columbus native, who permanently retired the US flag from Taipei’s American Embassy compound in December 1978.
