Mytheli Sreenivas

Mytheli Sreenivas is a historian of modern South Asia, with a focus on women’s and gender history, the history of sexuality and the family, colonialism and nationalism, and the history of reproductive health, politics, and rights.

She is the author of two books, Wives, Widows and Concubines: The Conjugal Family Ideal in Colonial India (2008), which received the Joseph Elder Prize from the American Institute of Indian Studies, and Reproductive Politics and the Making of Modern India (2021).

She holds faculty appointments in the departments of History and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and teaches courses on South Asian history, comparative women’s history, transnational feminisms, and reproductive rights and justice. Her teaching has been recognized by the Ratner Distinguished Teaching Award and the Paul W. Brown Excellence in Teaching Award.
