Adeeb Khalid

Adeeb Khalid is a historian of Central Asia. His work is devoted to Central Asia in the modern period, when the region was conquered by the Russian and Chinese empires and was divided between them. He works with materials in a number of Turkic languages (Uzbek, Turkish, Uyghur, Tatar) as well as Russian and Persian/Tajik.

His most recent book is Central Asia: A New History from the Imperial Conquests to the Present (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2021). He is also the author of The Politics of Muslim Cultural Reform: Jadidism in Central Asia (University of California Press, 1998); Islam after Communism: Religion and Politics in Central Asia (University of California Press, 2007), which won the Vucinich Prize in 2008; and Making Uzbekistan: Nation, Empire, and Revolution in the Early USSR (Cornell University Press, 2015), which won the Zelnik Prize in 2016. His work has been translated into Russian, Uzbek, Turkish, Persian, Italian, French, and Korean.
