David Stebenne

David Stebenne is a professor of history and law specializing on American political and legal history since 1929.  He is the author of the following books: Arthur J. Goldberg: New Deal Liberal (1996); Modern Republican: Arthur Larson and the Eisenhower Years (2006); and Promised Land: How the Rise of the Middle Class Transformed America, 1929-1968 (2020); and the co-author (with Joseph Mitchell) of New City Upon A Hill: A History of Columbia, Maryland (2007).  He is currently working on a history of the decline of the American middle class since the late 1960s.

Professor Stebenne has also written articles, essays and shorter pieces on various aspects of American politics and political and legal history. His writings have been appeared in such publications as The Conversation, the Huffington Post, the New Republic, Salon, U.S. News and World Report.  He also writes a Substack called Democracy in America Now.
