David Nichols is an associate professor of history at Indiana State University. He received his BA from Harvard and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. He is the author of Red Gentlemen & White Savages: Indians, Federalists, and the Search for Order on the American Frontier (2008); Engines of Diplomacy: Indian Trading Factories and the Negotiation of American Empire (2016); and Peoples of the Inland Sea: Native Americans and Newcomers in the Great Lakes Region, 1600-1870 (2017, forthcoming).
