Charles L. Hughes is a historian and music critic based in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the author of Country Soul: Making Music and Making Race in the American South and Why Bushwick Bill Matters, as well as numerous articles for a range of audiences. He is the co-editor of the University of Texas Press’ “American Music Series,” on the editorial board of the journal Southern Cultures, and is the co-founder of the online music newsletter No Fences Review. A native of Wisconsin, he is currently Associate Professor of History and Urban Studies at Rhodes College.
