Janet Klein is Associate Professor of History at the University of Akron, where she teaches courses on the Modern Middle East and the Ottoman Empire as well as topics such as nationalism and identity politics, mass violence, and borderlands and partitions. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Montana and her Master’s and Ph.D. from Princeton University. Her book, The Margins of Empire: Kurdish Militias in the Ottoman Tribal Zone, was published by Stanford University Press in 2011. Dr. Klein has also published over twenty articles on various topics related to late-Ottoman and Kurdish history and is currently working on the construction of minorities in the late-Ottoman Empire and post-Ottoman states. She currently resides in Akron, OH, where she also teaches yoga and fosters rescue dogs.
