This lesson explores the immediate and long-term effects of Imperialism on the Democratic Republic of the Congo through comparing past-Congo with present-day Congo. Students will first activate prior knowledge on Imperialism through a 5-3-1 activity and then review background information on the Congo. Students will then practice identifying Imperialist actions through a Jigsaw activity where students will be identifying, explaining, and then comparing Imperialist actions done in the Congo. Students will have opportunities to collaborate with their peers on the sources and have a group discussion to further unpack the sources and content. Students goals will be to ultimately compare how far present-day Congo has come from past-Congo through the sources that show the Congo during different times economically and politically. Students should be able to conclude that the Congo has faced long-term and negative consequences because of Imperialist roots that caused instability, violence, and corruption in their country.
